Issues and Strategies in the Selection of Composite Likelihoods

چکیده
The composite likelihood method has been proposed and systematically discussed by Besag (1974), Lindsay (1988), and Cox and Reid (2004). This method has received increasing interest in both theoretical and applied aspects. Compared to the traditional likelihood method, the composite likelihood method may be less statistically efficient, but it can be designed so as to be significantly faster to compute and it can be more robust to model misspecification. Although there are a number of ways to formulate a composite likelihood to balance the trade-off between the efficiency and computational price, there does not seem to exist a universal rule for constructing a combination of composite likelihoods that is both computationally convenient and statistically appealing. In this article we present some thoughts on the composite likelihood, drawing on basic knowledge about likelihood and estimating functions. A new efficiency result based on the Hoeffding decomposition of U -statistics is given. A recommendation is given to consider the construction of surrogate density functions as a way to better bridge the gap between likelihood methods and composite likelihood methods.

Learning with Blocks: Composite Likelihood and Contrastive Divergence
Composite likelihood methods provide a wide spectrum of computationally efficient techniques for statistical tasks such as parameter estimation and model selection. In this paper, we present a formal connection between the optimization of composite likelihoods and the well-known contrastive divergence algorithm. In particular, we show that composite likelihoods can be stochastically optimized b...
متن کاملComputationally Efficient Composite Likelihood Statistics for Demographic Inference.
Many population genetics tools employ composite likelihoods, because fully modeling genomic linkage is challenging. But traditional approaches to estimating parameter uncertainties and performing model selection require full likelihoods, so these tools have relied on computationally expensive maximum-likelihood estimation (MLE) on bootstrapped data. Here, we demonstrate that statistical theory ...

The selection of competent managers has always been of great importance in organizations. The reason is that the competency of managers can play an important role in the development of societies. One of the areas in Iran where the selection of competent managers requires a scientific model is sports federations. To this end, using grounded theory, this qualitative research aimed at designing a ...

Sex selection for non-medical reasons is a major controversy in around the world. Here in this paper, we presented the ethical arguments about sex selection for non-medical reasons and discuss about them in Islamic context. Significant arguments about sex selection relate to sexism and sex discrimination, sex disproportion, human dignity, playing God, psychological pressure on unselected childr...
